Our office is on Skippack Pike, so Blue Bell roofs are the ones we drive past every day. Blue Bell is a community in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County. It was called Pigeontown until 1840, when the post office took the name of the Blue Bell Inn — the old tavern on Skippack Pike that still anchors the village.
Much of Blue Bell was built out in the decades after World War II, so most streets are lined with two-story colonials, split-levels and ranches from the 1950s through the 1990s. Townhouse and carriage-home communities are mixed in, and older stone farmhouses still stand along the main roads. Houses from that era are often on their second or third roof, so what’s under the shingles matters as much as the shingles themselves.
Whitpain Township lists roof covering replacement as its own permit type, so a full replacement in Blue Bell is filed with the township before work starts. We handle that filing and coordinate with the township as part of every Blue Bell job.
Half of the homes in Blue Bell were built before 1983, and 15% predate 1960. Many of them are on their second or third roof, so the decking, flashing and ventilation underneath deserve a close look. About 28% of homes are townhouses or twins, where the new roof has to tie into the neighbor’s.
Blue Bell’s own largest hail on record was 1.25 inches, in July 2021 — but wind does far more roof damage here: storm wind damage was reported within 5 miles on 59 days since 2005, against 20 days with any hail. Two tornadoes touched down nearby: a weak one in Worcester Township during Tropical Storm Isaias (Aug. 4, 2020) and the much stronger Ida tornado near Fort Washington (Sept. 1, 2021).
